Join the List

List G Barristers welcomes expressions of interest in joining the List at any time.  Applications are encouraged from lawyers planning to complete the Victorian Bar Readers course. Barristers already practising in Victoria who may be members of another List, and barristers moving to Victoria from another jurisdiction are also encouraged to apply.

We do not have a cap or quota on the number of barristers on our List; all applications are considered on their merits. We look for applicants who will add strength to our reputation as leading commercial and public law advocates.

Members of our List are located in chambers around Melbourne, and our Clerking Team can advise on availability and types of chambers in different locations and the range of tenancy arrangements available. Wherever the location, the same clerking service support is provided.

NEW READERS

To practice as a barrister in Victoria, lawyers must first become ‘Readers’, which involves nine months of ‘reading’ with an experienced barrister who acts as a mentor. During this period, Readers are required to complete the two month Readers’ Course run by the Victorian Bar in March and September each year. Entry to the Bar Readers course is by exam.

List G Barristers welcomes applications from practitioners intending to undertake the Readers’ Course, or existing Readers. We offer the opportunity to develop your practice in a leading Melbourne commercial and public law list and have a proud history of high calibre recruitment.  Many of our experienced barristers also regularly mentor new Readers.

New Readers should apply to join List G Barristers before sitting the entrance exam for the Readers Course. It is best to apply as early as possible as places are limited for each intake.

Successful applicants are receive a commission free period on joining List G Barristers, an internal mentor and a comprehensive range of member only benefits.

Written applications should be submitted via the online lodgement facility below. They should be addressed to our CEO, Jane King, and include an application letter and curriculum vitae outlining your experience and legal practice.  Applicants who are successful in progressing to the next stage will be contacted to attend an interview with the List Committee.
