Peter appears regularly in the Federal Court and Supreme Court of Victoria, and on occasion in the Australian Competition Tribunal, AAT, VCAT, and the County Court. His practice includes statutory contravention proceedings, merits review and judicial review of administrative decisions and actions, appearances at inquiries, and general commercial litigation and advice work. In recent years he has appeared and advised in cases concerning competition and consumer law, tax, fisheries, environmental protection, customs, education, health, transport and roads, therapeutic goods, Medicare, migration and citizenship, extradition, FOI, information privacy, police regulation and industrial relations.
Peter has a particular interest in energy law, and has appeared for regulators or regulated entities in energy-related cases in the Federal Court, the Supreme Court, the Essential Services Commission Appeal Panel and the Australian Competition Tribunal. He has appeared in cases concerning the rules for the operation of the energy markets. He has conducted ADR of commercial disputes, including arbitrations, with an emphasis on disputes arising in the energy sector. He is a member of the dispute resolution panel for the energy markets. On occasion he also appears in constitutional matters.
He has been a member of the Victorian Bar since 1996, reading with the Hon Justice Anthony Cavanough and the Hon Justice Kevin Bell, and taking silk in 2011. His background was in commercial litigation and public law litigation, having previously worked at Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks (1992-1995) and as associate (1995-1996) to the Hon Michael Black AC QC, then Chief Justice of the Federal Court. Peter received his LLB (Hons) from the University of Melbourne in 1992, and also attended Keio University, Tokyo, in 1989-1990.
